The Journal of Ethnic and Cultural Studies invites you to submit a proposal to its Special Issue titled Educational Equity for Refugees: Sustainable Practices to be published in March 2025. The world is currently grappling with an unprecedented number of refugees, where we have reached the highest number of displaced people since World War II. At present, there are 108 million displaced people around the world, including refugees, asylum seekers, and internally displaced people (UNHCR, 2023). In this special issue on the education of refugees, we aim to showcase practice and research on equitable, culturally sustaining pedagogical practices for refugees.
According to Paris (2012), culturally sustaining pedagogy “… seeks to perpetuate and foster—to sustain—linguistic, literate, and cultural pluralism as part of the democratic project of schooling. In the face of current policies and practices that have the explicit goal of creating a monocultural and monolingual society, research and practice need equally explicit resistances that embrace cultural pluralism and cultural equality” (p. 93). The guiding question for the issue is: What are effective and sustainable practices for addressing educational inequities for refugees?
The proposals can be on any of the following topics:
- Refugees and identity
- Ethical and humanizing pedagogies
- Human rights
- Trauma-informed practices
- Culturally sustaining practices
- Asset based pedagogies
- Social emotional learning (SEL)
We hope to receive submissions from researchers partnering with practitioners, educators, leaders, and policy makers in different regions including displacement and resettlement settings in the Middle East, Latin America, Africa, Southeast Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America.
